Prior to joining the city of Las Vegas, Ms. Fretwell was the intergovernmental relations director for the city of Henderson, Nevada, where she headed public policy and program research and development for the city manager, mayor and city council. She also served as the city’s chief lobbyist at the Nevada State Legislature and was responsible for all federal, state and local activities. Before joining the city of Henderson, Ms. Fretwell worked for Clark County, where she was involved in extensive public policy and organizational analysis. She coordinated countywide strategic planning activities, including commission planning sessions, performance measurement, leadership development and business planning. She also served as a lobbyist at the State Legislature for two sessions, including acting as chief lobbyist in 1997. Ms. Fretwell also has a history of coordinating regional planning activities. As acting project coordinator of the Southern Nevada Strategic Planning Authority (SNSPA), she organized the initial and ongoing activities of the authority, including the management of all organizational activities. Fretwell is also a member of several professional and community organizations, including the National Conference for Community Justice, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, the Community Associates of Women’s Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the International City/County Managers Association, the Local Government Managers Association of Nevada, the American Society for Public Administration and Pi Alpha Alpha, a public administration honor society. |

Interesting happenings since science camp include multiple natural disasters, including the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 and the Oakland Hills Firestorm, which claimed his rental home in 1991 while a graduate student. Most recently, Berea got hit by a tornado for yet another message from upstairs, but it seems the damage was not so bad and Jay was unscathed. Other major milestones include getting married in 1993 to Julie Duckart of Santa Cruz, CA. Jay and Julie lives in Berea with two dogs (Indy and Toby) and are happy when people visit (feel free to call anytime!) Jay returned to NYSC on Staph in 1989 after he graduated from Wabash. At Wabash, Jay was a member of TKE Fraternity where he served as treasurer for 1.5 years. Jay was active in the theater at Wabash (his part time job) about 10-20 hours a week and continued with some work as a graduate student with the Berkeley Contempary Opera company. Jay enjoys watching sports (and playing Rotissiere baseball), going to movies, playing on the computer, gardening and playing with the dogs (a 3 pound maltese) Jay was a Fulbright Scholar during the 2001-2002 academic year and worked in Lyon France with Lyndon Emsley doing NMR/MRI research. Jay and Julie have a 4 year old daughter named Katie who is growing fast (as they all do). In 1999, Jay's wife was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and they have been doing treatment ever since. Has served the alumni association as president. Currently consultant in Washington, DC. Recently (July 4, 1999) got married to Gregg LaRue who also works in DC. They make their home in a suburb of DC just west of the city in Virginia. The wedding was a joyous and wonderful event with a large number of NYSC folks in attendance. Julie Robinson was there as a bridesmaid with her husband and camper from a few years before us. Other NYSC folks were from a variety of years. At some point I'll post some photos from the event. They did their honeymoon in Europe and spent some time in Scandinavia while over there. |

She's working on a NIH-funded project focused on understanding the genetics of heart disease. Science camp related news: Chris Fullerton (her brother, who lives here in PA too) and Malia recently attended Paul and Betsy's wedding, on August 1st, at Cheat Mountain Club. It was the first time she'd been back to the 'Green Rolling Hills' since 1990, and it was great. John and Claude were there, as was Ian Dunn (Karen couldn't make it unfortunately) - plus many many staph-ers from across the generations (but no Woody, :-( ). She says, Paul and Betsy are still their same wonderful selves, and very much in love - its neat. |

After getting a masters degree in biochemistry, I worked in a biochem lab for a couple of years. I got bored of that really quick, so started my own business in the fast food industry. Now, I am currently starting a chain of juice club type establishment in the mid-west. Most of these establishments are in the shopping malls. I currently own 2 establishments and am working on the 3rd. I finally got married last year to my wife Beth, everything is great (with the exception that I wish there were more than 24 hours in a day). Anyway, I missed the musty old cabinets and the late nite gathering at the fire in WV. Even after so many years, it brings warm feeling back. Kroger, Walgreen's, Hospital, Rehabilitation, Home Health, Surgery Centers, Nursing Homes and I've done everything from peon to Staff Pharmacist to Clinical to Pharmacy Director. Now I'm mostly at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, but I always have several things going. I'm a state officer in the pharmacy association. I have an 18-month old niece that lives about a mile from me. And my baby (an 11 year old cockapoo) is extremely possessive. Not much to tell except I love my work and I enjoy traveling every chance I get. |
