How to Find Call Numbers

What Do I Need to Know to Find a Call Number in the Library?

To find a call number in Hutchins Library, you need to break down the elements of the call number and then systematically find each part, beginning with the first numbers (designating the major subject area using the Dewey decimal system). Books are shelved numerically by the first numbers, so the first numbers(s) tell you which area (or floor) of the library the item can be located.

After the first numbers(s), items are arranged by the letters and numbers designating subdivisions under the major subject areas.

Locating books in Hutchins Library

A listing of the book stacks, by call numbers, can be found at the entrance of the Library. You can also use the Hutchins Library Virtual Tour to determine where books are shelved. As you can tell, the circulating collection is located on the Third Floor of Library. The fiction collection can be found in the southwest corner; however, call numbers for fiction titles do NOT include a subject classification number (H459 instead of 784.067 H459).
