How to Find Call Numbers


What is a Call Number?

Call numbers are a series of letters and numbers assigned to items in the library. Hutchins Library uses the Dewey Decimal system of call numbers ensuring that items about the same subjects are catagorized together.

As mentioned earlier, the Dewey decimal system uses numbers to designate major subject areas,and then a combination of letters and numbers to designate subdivisions under the major classifications. Books can be retrieved from the stacks (or shelves) of Hutchins Library according to the call number associated with each book.
