Conducting a SUBJECT Search

  • To begin your search in BANC, acess the Hutchins Library Home Page.

  • Click the Search button (as highlighted below) underneath "BANC."




  • If you are trying to locate a book, CD, or DVD on a particular subject:

  1. Type the subject in the search box below "Find This". As shown by (1) below.
  2. Choose Browse Subject from the "Find Results in" box. As shown by (2) below.
  3. Click Search. As shown by (3) below.


  • Notice how in a Browse Subject search you are dropped into an alphabetical listing of subject headings.

  • The number of items the Library has on a subject appears next to the Subject Heading.

  • For example, if searching for materials with "Olympics" as a subject, click on Olympics or the number in brackets [ ].

  • Also notice the Info button next to the [1] in the results screen below.




  • Clicking the button, will result in a new screen providing additional information about this subject heading -- including alternative/synonyms for the term. (In this case (shown below), you are given alternatives to the subject "Olympics," including the broader term "sports" and the narrower terms "Olympic games (Ancient).") This information provides you with potential alternative search terms.
