Locating Periodicals

Hutchins Library owns periodicals in several formats: microform, print and electronic. This tutorial demonstrates how all of these formats appear in BANC.

  • To begin your search for a periodical, access the Hutchins Library Home Page.

  • Click the Search button (as highlighted below) underneath "BANC."

  • In this example we will be trying to locate the Journal of Marriage and the Family.

    1. Type Journal of Marriage and the Family in the "Find This" search box [1 below].
    2. Choose Journal Title from the "Find Results In" box [2 below].
    3. Click Search [3 below].

    • The results record is shown below. Notice that four titles appear in the results. We will focus on the first item.

    • Click on the first title appearing in the results.

    • Upon clicking on the title, a record of the item will appear (shown below). When searching for a journal title within BANC, you must identify whether or not Hutchins Library has a specific volume, and in what format these will appear.

    • To find out what volumes (dates) the Library owns, look at the "Summary Holdings" line (highlighted below).
    • To find out the format of the journal, look next to the "Call Number" (highlighted below). Periodical J, for example, indicates that the format is Print. Microfiche J indicates a microfiche format. Thus we can tell that this journal has varies volumes available in print and microfiche format.

    • Notice the Additional Format field at the bottom of the record. This indicates that there is a format other than print or microfiche available for this title. In this case, the title is also available in electronic format.

    • Click on Journal of Marriage and the Family [electronic resource] next to the Additional Format field.

    • Clicking on the title, results in a record (as shown below) for the electronic version of the journal.

    • This journal is one of the many E-Journals (electronic journals) subscribed to by Hutchins Library. E-Journals provide access to full-text articles. The "Notes" field (highlighted) indicates what volumes of this journal we have electronic access to.

    • Notice that next to the "Linked Resources" (highlighted) field is a direct link to the database providing access to the E-Journal you are trying to locate. If you wanted to go directly to the database to search the journal, the link "Connect to new resource" would take you there.
