How to Find Articles
How do you find an article when you only have a citation?
At times, you may find that you only have a citation for an article. When you need the full-text of an article, you can:
Using the Full Text Electronic Journal List
The Full Text Electronic Journal List is a database of all of the full-text journals Hutchins Library has access to electronically. To access the Full Text Journal List, click on the link to Full Text Journals at the top of the library's home page. Once you gain access to the page, follow the steps below to find the full text article from your citation.
- Type in the JOURNAL title from your citation in the search box next to "Find e-journals by title or ISSN."
- Click Search.
- If Hutchins Library has access to the full text articles within the journal you typed in, this will be indicated on the screen by the number of results of databases in which that journal appears. Compare the years of coverage for that journal to your citation. If Hutchins Library has access to the year/volume that you need, click on the linkable database name next to the years of coverage.
- In most cases, you will be taken straight to the journal record in the database indicated. Click on the year of the journal article you need from the list of articles given on the screen.

Check BANC
|
If we do not have access to the article electronically, or if you would just prefer to see the article in the journal in print format, you can check our catalog (BANC) to see if we own that journal in print.
- Click on BANC (or click SEARCH) from the center of the library's home page.
- Type in the journal name in which the article is found in the search box .
- Choose Journal Title from the "Find Results In box".
- Click Search.
If Hutchins Library owns the journal, verify if the year/volume is available. (This information is located next to "Summary Holdings" and "Current Issues.") If available, you will need to know the journals FORMAT: Print or Microform. To check the format, look for "Call Number." If the Call Number is "Periodical," the journal is in print and is likely to be found in the bound journal collection on the first floor. If the Call Number is "Microfiche," the journal is stored in Microfiche format. The Microfiche collection is also located on the first floor. If you need assistance locating a journal, Ask A Librarian.

Request the Article Through Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
|
Interlibrary Loan is a wonderful service allowing Hutchins Library to borrow items from other participating libraries. Before requesting an item through Interlibrary Loan, make sure to first check BANC and the Full Text Electronic Journal List. If Hutchins Library does not have access to the article you need, you may request the article through Interlibrary Loan.
There are two ways to submit a request: the online form or print form.
Using the Online Form
- Click on the Interlibrary Loan link on the library's home page.
- Fill out the form as completely as possible. Double-check the information you supply; an incomplete or incorrect citation can delay the arrival of your article.
- Review the copyright information; verify that you agree to the terms.
- Click Submit.
Using the Print Form
- Come to the Hutchins Library Reference Desk with your article citation.
- Ask for an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) form.
- Fill out the form as completely as possible. For an article, fill out the BACK of the ILL form. Double-check the information you provide; an incomplete or incorrect citation can delay the arrival of your article.
- Verify that you agree to the copyright terms by reading and signing the form.
- Submit your form to a Reference Desk staff member.
Whether using the online or print version of the ILL form, you will be notified by email (unless you specified differently) when the article has arrived. You can pick your article up at the Reference Desk.
