Evaluate Websites

Of all the resources you encounter during the research process, websites are the most important to evaluate as anyone can post anything on the web and making a webpage look professional is easy.

Unless you evaluate websites, you could unwittingly cite a website presenting a 7th grade school report, a commercial marketing ploy, or a "spoof." You can find almost anything on the web, but just because you can find it does not mean that it is reliable, accurate, or presented in a professional manner.

When evaluating a website as a possible resource for your research consider the websites:

  • authority,
  • purpose,
  • currency,
  • content,
  • bias and point of view.

Note: If you are not using websites as resources for a research assignment, you might not need to answer the questions in this section. If uncertain, ask your instructor for clarification.
