Evaluating Resources

Evaluate Websites - Content

Like books and articles, you should consider the content of a website you use as a resource.

In determing the worth of a website's content, consider:

  1. The type and depth of content the site provides.
Check the coverage of the topic you're looking for. Does the site add to the facts, issues, or arguments you're already aware of? Does it provide details not available elsewhere?

  2. The additional sources the site refers to, cites, or links to?
Look for allusions to other sources or lists of references.

  3. Verification the accuracy of the site.
Look for data, statistics, or other facts that you can check against other sources. Then check them!

Answer the following questions about the website you are evaluating.
  • What type and depth of content does the site provide?
  • What sources are referred or linked to? What does the quality of the references or links tell you about the site?
  • What information on the site can you verify? How can you tell that it is or is not accurate?
Based on what you know about the content of this website, is it appropriate to use for your assignment? Why or why not?
