Evaluating Resources

Evaluate Websites - Currency

Finding current information is a main reason for using web resources in academic research. If you can't confirm that the information you find on the web is up-to-date, you should use other resources instead.

To help in determining the currency of a website and the information it contains, consider:

  1. When the site was created.
Look for a copyright date at the bottom of the page.

  2. When the site was last updated.
The last update date is usually at the very top or bottom of the page. Websites that are not updated regularly may be "abandoned."

  3. If the date is appropriate for the topic.
For some topics, information a few months or a year old is out-of-date.

Answer the following questions about the website you are evaluating.
  • When was the site created? What does that indicate about the value of the site?
  • When was the site last updated? What does that indicate about the value of the site?
  • Are these dates appropriate for the research question? Why or why not?
Based on what you know about the currency of this website, is it appropriate to use for your assignment? Why or why not?
