Evaluating Resources

Evaluating Books - Date of Publication

When evaluating texts, consider the following:

  • When was the book published?

When researching some research questions, publication date is very important. Cutting-edge scientific resources may be out-of-date after a year or two. Other research questions, such as those with a focus on history or literature, are not so time-dependent. A book about the Revolutionary War written in 1790 may be more useful that one written in 1990.

Consider your research question and whether or not the publication date of your resource indicates that it would be a good source.

Answer the questions above for the book you're evaluating. Overall, does what you know about the date of publication of the book indicate that it is a good resource?

Overall, is this book a good resource to use for your assignment? Explain.
