Evaluating Resources

Evaluate Books - Purpose

When evaluating texts, consider the following:

  • Why was the book written? (To inform, to persuade, to entertain, to give an overview?)
  • Does the author's purpose suit yours? (The book's purpose is typically outlined in the introduction which can usually be found near the table of contents.)

Answer the questions above for the book you are evaluating. Overall, does what you know about the purpose of the book indicate that it's a good resource? Explain.
