Title of Project	The Role of YlaJ on the Function and Localization of SleB in Bacillus anthracis
Abstract (optional)	Bacillus anthracis is a spore-forming bacterium which makes decontamination efforts difficult. SleB is a germination specific-lytic enzyme that helps to degrade the specialized peptidoglycan of the spore cortex, a step that is necessary for germination to occur. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible role YlaJ may play on the function and localization of SleB by creating an in-frame deletion of ylaJ in the B. anthracis chromosome. Through this study, ylaJ was successfully amplified and inserted into plasmid pBKJ236, and future plans include creating an in-frame deletion of ylaJ that will be introduced and integrated into the B. anthracis chromosome. A better understanding of germination and the proteins involved will facilitate decontamination efforts.
